Why Microchipping Your Dog or Cat in the UK Is So Important
Microchipping
Microchipping your pet is one of the simplest and most effective ways to ensure their safe return if they ever go missing. Whether you’ve recently welcomed a new puppy or kitten into your home or have an older pet who’s never been chipped, now is the time to act. At Petals, we offer professional microchipping services for dogs and cats, right here in London — giving you peace of mind and your pet a permanent form of ID.
What Is Microchipping?
Microchipping is a quick and safe procedure where a tiny chip (about the size of a grain of rice) is inserted under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. This chip contains a unique ID number linked to your contact details in a national pet database. If your pet goes missing and is found by a vet, rescue centre or local authority, they can be scanned and quickly reunited with you.
When Should I Microchip My Pet?
Puppies should be microchipped before they are 8 weeks old (usually done by the breeder). If not, it’s your legal responsibility to do it.
Kittens must now be chipped by 20 weeks of age under the new UK cat microchipping law.
If you’ve adopted a pet and aren’t sure if they’re microchipped, we can easily scan them and check.
Keeping Your Contact Details Up to Date
A microchip is only as good as the information registered with it. Make sure to update your details if you move house or change phone numbers. We can help you check your records and ensure they’re up to date.
Is Microchipping a Legal Requirement in the UK?
In the UK, it is a legal requirement to microchip your dog by the age of 8 weeks and to keep your contact details up to date. From 10 June 2024, microchipping cats also became compulsory by the time they are 20 weeks old.
Failing to comply could result in a fine of up to £500, so it’s important to ensure your pets are chipped and registered correctly.
